Low coolant light flashed its warning. Noticed at 65 mph on highway. I had checked coolant on weekend and it was fine.

I continued driving , watching coolant gauge which was locked on 3pm position.

5 minutes later reached destination. Coolant bottle empty.

I had routed 1999 return hose form radiator to bottle under the ECU snorkel and it had dipped down and caught the PS pulley. A nice gouge was machined out and a 1mm thick stream of coolant was projecting out about 30 cm

I topped off with spare coolant , wrapped with electrical tape from the spare Kit, and drove home 12 miles without incident

I would be cautious about the reliability of the temperature gauge once your coolant light comes on. If you blew all your coolant, I think it's fairly possible there wouldn't be any indication on the temperature gauge to indicate an overheat (as there would be a lack of coolant flowing over the sensor).

In my mind, if it's safe to do so, the second I see a low coolant light, I'm pulling over and turning the engine off.

Nice roadside fix though!

Gory pictures. The original hose had softened and sagged into the pS pulley. In later model 1999, the ECU air snorkel has a additional clip to pick up the radiator hose my early 1999 does not have

Another fix is to drape the hose over the air snorkel

This is extreme 1999 Volvo trivia

I modified my snorkel tube to add the clip as the original had fallen apart. Transferred the one from the original.

You were lucky! Go get that lottery ticket now!

Everything pretty much worked as intended. I caught the coolant light with a cm of coolant Lefton the reservoir, popped hood , and saw problem right away. The hose had gotten soft vs the new one , but I’ll will figure out a way to secure it from a repeat in 20 years

looks like they added an extra hose or snorkel for every new model year. I spot at least 3 that my 96 doesn't have. More hoses and snorkels equals better car. Quite simple ...

I hear he even topped it up with Genuine Volvo coolant this time =)
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
