Do you have another key to try, Mick?

Try if you have with any key with chip close as possible to reader if you get wrong response so your reader is okay at least. Just cold throw. I can go test with totally another style chip what it says though...
Edit: For earlier i can not distinct yet with live data is key wrong or no key at all only between (No key or wrong key) and right key. Same responses for live data on my 850.
If you know PIN you can code it yourself too if ever needed but i suggest checking the reader ring yes. It is sensitive where it is too if moved at all (not sure can it on Volvos, but one other manufacturer one had loose one and if it moved at all to wrong place it did not read chip at all.)

Do you know if your car has a antenna ring around the the ignition switch? As you are having problems with both keys I don't think the keys are the issue. Certainly anything is possible, but unlikely.
What is more common is the antenna ring having problems. They can totally fail and sometimes it can just be corrosion/dirt at it's connector.
You can replace the antenna or first try cleaning the connector with electrical cleaner and see what happens.
You need to remove the covers behind the steering wheel. There are 2 or 3 Torx screws under the casing to remove, and then carefully prise the 2 parts a part. There are 2 plastic tanks that hold the 2 parts together that can break if you are not careful.
The antenna ring clips on and has a really flimsy clip on it so again careful removing it if you hope to re-use.
Do you have key fobs for unlocking the doors? If you use those all the time. first try manually using the key to lock and unlock the drivers door lock 2 or 3 times. Sometimes the system can get confused, and this helps reset it.
Neil.
