Replacing powered tailgate struts with gas struts

Hi all. I have a 2013 XC60. The powered tailgate struts have developed the well documented problem with not always opening the gate and making a grinding noise. Dealer wants $1157 USD to replace them. My question is whether I can replace the powered struts with non-powered gas struts? I don't mind manually lifting and closing the tailgate, which is what we do with our 1996 850. Has anyone done this swap, or know if it's possible? (Sorry if this duplicates earlier posting, but I couldn't find this topic previously addressed.) Thanks for any advice. Eliot
