850 Sound insulation on the conductor side

Post by manovlov »

Hy Buddies,

I asked the question in "What did you do for your Volvo today topic", to run the risk to see it to be drowned in the flow of the topic, so sorry about that, but i would be glad to find a solution to my issue.

As mentioned in the topic's title, i would like to know if i have to unbolt the central console to extract the sound insulation carpet to let it dry ?

Thanks again for your patience and advices.

Manov

Remove:
1. Cigarette lighter panel (2 screws)
2. Washer under the handbrake lever
3. Cover for the glove compartment.

Loosen the connectors for the tunnel bracket.
Remove the 4 screws and remove the bracket.

Well, it doesn’t go the way I expected.
I found the two bolts over the cigarette lighter the 2 ones in the glove box and the washer under the handbrake ( I think).

But the central console still stays « blocked » under the ashtray area :

Hi Manov, I am a little hazy on the 850 center console compared to the V70/S70 version which can be removed in about 10 minutes once familiar.

First thing is I have not removed an stick/manual console no not sure how the gearshift is treated. On automatics, the plate around the stick can stay in place. With and auto is is also better to chock the wheels, and then use the shift over ride switch and move the shift lever to N to give more room to remove the console.

You are best removing the ashtray first. I think I recall correctly there are 2 screws at the top (Torx) that have to be removed and then the unit comes out.

Then carefully pry the front of the section with the cigarette lighter and it will come out. Usual warning on old plastics! I can't recall if there are 2 more screws behind this part you remove.

The console should then come out. Again not sure on the stick shift if the gear knob has to be removed as well.

Looking at the stick shift, I think you may have to remove the gear knob to allow the console to get over it. The lower part of the knob I think rotates about 45 degrees to disconnect the gear shift boot from the knob. I don't know on a stick shift knob if it is the same as the auto which you have to give a sharp tug upwards to remove. Hopefully someone with a manual trans can chip in.

Salut Neil ! What's up ?
So, This car is full of plastics that do theirs ages... Carefully, i extracted the ashtray first and,i get a roll spring , a sort of metallic fastener, and the body of the ashtray did fall down...

Sound isolation
As i could get the central console out, I made a point of cutting away the moss, which was very wet, and dried the floor. The moss is only wet on the flat surface, and there is no rising on the sides. So I thought I would dry the cut piece and put it back. First and foremost, I need to use RUSTOL to stop the little bit of rust there is...

Well, I'm not satisfied, working outside like this, on a parking lot, is pretty hard. And to tell you the truth, I worked for two years like crazy for my diploma, I'm blown up...

Tomorrow, i have to treat the floor , then to let dry, and wednesday, i spray a finish coat. To there, the sound insulation will be dry and i will rebuild the interior :

Along with a nice glass of wine ! Doing battle with the interior can be a chore.
Our friend Robert DIY has a video of replacing the shifter knob on his car, he removed the entire assembly, and there was a vise and large hammer involved.
