I normally do not do my oil change because I do not have work space due to my living situation. I normally have it done at the shop but I wanted to try the BG EPR engine treatment so I went ahead and ran that through, drained the oil and then went to remove the filter.
From all info I had found the 1999 S70 takes a cartridge type filter with the removable paper element. So naturally I purchased one after looking up the filter for my year and model. But to my surprise the car had a regular spin on filter. In this case a Valvoline VO25 as I had last gone there. I know not the best idea but my options and time are limited.
Anyway I was able to cross reference the Valvoline filter number and eventually found a K&N filter that matched (only other option was basically Fram; there were a few Mann filters and Mobil 1 but couldn’t find a match).
My question is how does this car have the spin on filter? Is it possible the engine was changed or modified to accept the spin on? Really weird.
Also, does anyone know a Mann filter number that would be compatible with such an engine? I may try to buy a couple in case I do my oil change in the future.
If any more info is needed I will try my best.
Thanks very much.
Jim

Get pictures of the engine block number and then pictures of the oil filter and housing with the filter removed.

If it is spin-on oil filter...Mann part # is W917 .
Actually...i just checked Valvoline filter catalogue on-line and Valvoline V025 is used in 850,s,v,c,xc70 and Mann replacement for it is Mann w917 since that's the correct oil filter for these cars.
Valvoline V095 is also used in P80 and it seems it's interchangeable with V025...since both of them can be used on these cars.
Valvoline V066 is catridge type of oil filter and according to Valvoline catalogue...it's used only in turbo engines from '99 and later.
That said...catridge type of oil filter...***
according to Valvoline catalogue
***is used ONLY in turbo models '99 & '00 P80 cars, non turbo models still use spin-on filters.

My naturally aspirated 2000 V70 uses the black plastic oil filter housing with paper insert, part 1275808. I guess you're calling that a cartridge filter.

It was a 1999-2000 transition.
NA use spin on filters through 1999
Turbos I believe use paper cartridges from ?? Into 1999
Sounds like in 2000 NA went to paper cartridge too.

My 2000 V70 NA had paper element filter as does the 2000 R. The 98 V70 XC had the metal can which was the same as I understand it for all Volvos since the 1960's! My 1965 122S and 68 123GT had the metal cans.
Interesting observation and just goes to show that you never know everything and continue to be surprised!
Thanks for the info guys.
Neil.
