Junkyard haul - What's it worth?

Post by FireFox31 »

What do you think I should have paid for this junkyard haul? I pulled all these parts myself. Your input will help me negotiate my next parts purchase from this yard, hopefully on Monday. Thanks!

The parts list is:
Front right door - minor dents and scratches
Rear right door - minor dents and scratches
Sunroof assembly, glass, and motor (not shown)
Rear right seat bottom - ruined but good plastic
Front left wheel arch plastic
Rear right wheel arch plastic
Rear left door seal
Front brake caliper bracket x2 - moderate rust
Front left brake caliper - moderate rust, core
Front brake dust shield x2
Rear right tail light top and bottom
Rear grab bar and and light x2 - brittle and light rust
TI-83 plus calculator (stashed in pocket behind front seat)

Perhaps I should ask, what do you think I should be paying for my next junkyard haul, also pulling them myself:
Steering knuckle x2 - light rust
Front axle x2 - assuming Volvo brand
Front axle bearing support - assuming light rust
Bumper x2 - intact but ugly
Blower fan behind dash center vents
Heater flap servo motor
Front passenger's knee trim
ETM from 1999 NA - unknown condition

Hard part is different areas of the country can charge very different prices. I use Pick-n-Pull web-page and see if there are any nearer you that may help get a better idea. Pick-n-Pull don't haggle on price typically. I have been lucky to get some leeway over the years as I went so often the staff let some stuff slide or gave me the price of a lesser similar part if there was any slight damage.

https://www.picknpull.com/part-pricing/ ... criteria=d

This is a yard in Cumberland R.I.

Had a quick look but there are 2 in the Northeast. They also seem to have yards branded Schnitzer and a couple are PnP there and unfortunately they don't seem to have parts pricing on the Schnitzer pages.

For PnP pricing I would estimate your haul at PnP would be in the $2-300 range. Each door is $65. That is a good deal depending if they charge for all the interior stuff lick the handles and locks.

Thanks for the two website references. I've been relying on car-part.com for prices and part availability. Yards I find through car-part.com seem to use their pricing. Prices in my area seem similar once you consider condition and if I'm picking or they are.

I'll compare Harry's, Pick-N-Pull, and car-part prices. Ultimately, I can only get what's near me, so they may be a higher price than others. When the part quality is excellent, hard to find, and much cheaper than retail (like the front brake dust shields I got), I'm happy.

If you feel it has been worth it and you get a decent discount to the new part then you are ahead.

Sometimes you can luck out and someone had just replaced a part before scrapping a car. That is when you really win. Getting painted doors that match are also a bonus.

Good hunting!
