Oil drip from bottom of turbo

Post by rguzz »

I'll look again more closely, maybe with a mirror, but oil is definitely dripping off the bottom of the turbo. Return line is dry, clamps are tight? The big clamp right in the middle of the turbo is a little hard to access. Drip appears worse over last several months. Ideas? 96 850t. Car passes the glove test well, but a pcv hose down there does look a little wet.

Looked more closely, appears to be dripping down from where the turbo inlet pipe attaches to turbo inlet flange. The clamp was pretty loose. Not thinking there should be that much oil pooling at the lower part of that plastic inlet but I guess so. I had it off recently, and there was a puddle of oil in the tube which I attributed to normal. I do wish I had done the wider diameter pcv hose mod when I did the PCV last, maybe 3-4 years ago. So, I cleaned it off well and we shall see. BTW how much oil at the bottom of the plastic inlet pipe is too much?

Hey, my car is doing exactly the same. All pipes dry and confirmed by senior Volvo mechanic I trust. Have to believe it is just the turbo inlet/outlet rubber hoses and clips that have shrunk with and and while the car was unused.

I will have to do the same and clean off the pipes and check the hose clamps for tightness. Thanks for the heads up!

I hope so, easy fix if that's it. The pipe wasn't snugged up against where it should sit, so I pushed it forward with one hand, tightened clamp with the other, in my case 7mm socket tight rather than just a long screwdriver. Amazing how much tighter you can get those clamps if you use a socket!

Yup! That is the only way I will tighten those. All done by braille lying over the engine. Love that job! I replaced the rubber section above the turbo for the pipe to the intercooler as the original was really squishy. Haven't tightened ot touched it since.

Mine does that too. I replaced the turbo outlet rubber hose, that helped, but leaking out of the plastic pipe from the air filter to turbo. The oil is from the pcv system, and the plastic hose can't fully seal, so oil slowly leaks out that pools up at the end of the pipe. I have confirmed this, I removed my pcv hose from the ptc nipple, and vented to atmosphere for a few months, my leak stopped, re connected it, and it came right back. I chalk it up to increased blowby from older engine causing oil separator to not work as well.

Is that grade 2 contracted braille or standard long form? =)

Use the 988014 clamps there, not cheap drug store clamps

It has the OE clamps on there as working with braille is not a strength of mine ( ), so I try to avoid re-do's. Nothing but the best for the garage Queen!
