1998 V70 NA - Emissions code P0440 -Emissions code 3

Hi guys,

Been a while since I did one of these on a 98. This is the system this car has:

I have looked a You Tube video of this and now recall what it was all about. Royal pain as it needs the inner fender removed as the car with Emissions code 3 has the rectangular charcoal filter under the front LH fender forward of the front wheel. To access you have to remove the 11 rivets holding the mud-flap and inner fender to access it as the hose runs up to behind the front wheel between inner and outer fenders. I need parts:

1) 9135831 - Rubber hose coupling
2) 9141209 - Hose (actually a coupling like 1)).
3) 944975 - Rubber hose - 1m
4) 978170 - Oetiker clamp x 2

Total from Volvo of Toronto with free shipping is $40 with tax

Are there any other parts I may need (I do have the rivets)

I think this is the code my 98 had. My J hose was fine, but my purge valve was stuck open under the hood. Replaced with one from wreckers and all is fine. But it could be anything in the emissions, even a loose gas cap

Where was your carbon canister? Is it at the front or back?

I should add that I am normally used to P0442 and P0445 ? Which are the small and large emission leak codes. Those are the codes I have had with the rear mounted carbon canisters on P80's both FWD and AWD.

I also found the original post. I realise I will have to check this again as I cannot find an EFI-816 code.

I also found the original post and will post that from my laptop where I have it pinned. Here it is:

So I will have run the test again before ordering parts.

I realised (D'oh!!) that I had the wireless mouse plugged in the Com1 port. So hopefully that will now work!

On my 1998 C70 you slide under the right rear corner of the car. It is just forward or just behind the axle. Been a couple of year since been under there.

I reckon some day I'll need to drop the tank and replace all the hoses. A lot of tiny pinholes will add up to EVAP leak.

On the AWD in my 00 'R' it all sits above the rear sub-frame which is hideous to access. On this particular car it is under the front of the LH fender with the valve mentioned mounted on the inner fender behind the LH wheel on the inner fender. To access this all needs the whole LH fender liner and 11 rivets to be drilled out and replaced. Volvo is currently charging $5 CDN or so for each rivet. Fortunately I had a big bag of them at one point and have enough for this job.

Don't be fooled into using standard rivets especially if you have mud flaps. If you hit a curb it will bend your fender. The plastic coated ones Volvo use are designed to pull through preventing that.
