P0351 check engine code pulled

Post by Mr. Detail »

The P0351 DTC is seen when the ignition coil A primary or secondary circuit has a malfunction.
Is the photo of what I pasted below what we are talking about the need to replace here? ('02 V70 - Base)

If so do you guys replace all five (5) coils at the same time or just the bad one?
A set of five OE are pretty expensive. Over $200.00

Just a follow-up. Can anyone recommend a coil set that doesn't cost over $200?
Maybe one with decent quality.

P0351 is Ignition Coil Cylinder 1, Signal Faulty. Ignition coil primary winding circuit. Not necessarily the primary winding in the coil.

The fault could be the #1 coil or the wiring to the #1 coil. Swap coil #1 with coil #2 and clear the codes, run the engine.
If the P0351 changes to a P352 the coil is defective. If it stays P351 it is the wiring to coil #1.

OEM Volvo coil packs are very reliable. Over 300,000 miles on them is not unusual. If the plastic is is cracking through on them you might consider replacing all of them. Otherwise replace a defective one with a low mileage used one. The used one will probably out last the car.

I run a decent size fleet of Volvos dispersed around the US

For ones thst I want no failures, I replace the coils every 100k miles with Bosch ones

For four of the cars that are lightly used in on urban dense areas, I use these coils from the above and replace individuals as they fail. I sell half excess coils on eBay for an average of $15 each. I give away the other half to folks tight on bread but doing things like tax prep, financial advising, car detailing, NICU nurses

Yes, I’m old and judgy. Have to go with your strengths.

It's about an hour away from me, but when I pay my two bucks and get my hand stamped, I feel I'm at church.

It’s amazing to me how poor these guys run their business.

They could massively improve their customer base by doing two simple things

Inventory cars as they come in with pictures, including vin and options plates. 5 minutes per car with a camera.

Provide a service to tag car for a customer driving four hours fora given day/ time and cover it for no picking.

In the Northeast, expanding your base to 4-6 hours adds 10s millions of people

RickHaleParker; Thanks for your detailed response. I already replaced what may have been the original ignition coils about a year ago. I bought a cheap set and am probably paying the price for that choice now. The car has 171k miles on her.

abscate: So you sell half excess coils on eBay for an average of $15 each. Can you please explain what you mean by "half excess"? Does that mean used? Are you allowed to send me a link to those Ebay coils? So how do you know if a ":used" coil is still good? Do you somehow test them? Sorry a lot of questions.

ignatz: I am familiar with your "Joe's Used parts" website but I think I would have to go up there and pull the parts out of the car myself. Isn't that how it works?

Yes, you pull the parts. Stuff like glove box doors, floor mats, wheels might be other things you might want, so you need to have all the tools you need. I'ts a long way to get there, but even if you don't get anything, it's fun just walking around.
Abscate, they probably will never change. I'll let you know if a 5 speed shows up!
