How to remove automatic shifter to clean?

How can I remove the base of the automatic transmission gear shifter in order to clean the stuck shift lock override button? I have the center console out, but that base of the shifter remains.

The button is stuck down, so the key can't be removed from the ignition. If I could pry the button up, it might accidentally get pressed and stuck down again. Thus I'd like to clean it. Thanks.

I believe, there is a write up on KEY BEING STUCK IN IGNITION, search MVS -- CN90 may have a detailed DIY.

You should be able to pull the plastic cover off of the shifter base once you pull the shift knob off. Remove the console first, then there should be tabs that hold the cover to the shifter base. That should give you plenty of room to clean around the button.
