Should I worry?

Post by Mr. Detail »

Hello, all, and Merry Christmas early!

I just finished up changing out all 5 spark plugs with new NGK Iridium's and also replaced all five ignition coils with new Bosch ones.
What bothered me was when I pulled the spark plugs from cylinders 2,3 & 4 the plugs were coated with motor oil. Cylinders 1 & 5 were clean as a whistle. Do I need to worry about the oil in the spark plug hole area?

I am due for an oil change after about 5k miles and I did not realize I was driving on a quart low. The car has 171k miles on her.

abscate, I replace those rubber gaskets with every oil change. Besides, how would the oil get down into the spark plug holes when that gasket is up on top?

If it's a bad leak, it pools and runs across the head, into the plug wells, then runs down the block onto the exhaust (which looks like a smokey disaster).

Also - I appreciate the positive words above of not worrying. I saw a sign in a business once: "Worry is a mis-use of the imagination."

<EDIT> I really need to proof read my babblings more.

Is this the first time you yourself have changed the spark plugs?

Do you do your own oil changes or pay someone else to do it for you?

If it were me, I’d clean out the plug holes (with the spark plugs screwed in still) with some paper towels. Compressed air next. Then continue on with life and recheck the afflicted holes in a couple weeks time. Chances are someone spilled oil when they were pouring it in.

Here’s a marvelous apparatus for eliminating the chance of the aforementioned.

Pete, no this is the 2nd time I have changed out the spark plugs. No, I do my own oil changes every 5k miles with full synthetic. No one spilled any oil my friend.

If I may chime in, like everyone before said, don't worry.
Do clean the plug wells and area above, do check PCV condition, do keep an eye and never trouble the alleged trouble ahead of time :D
...and Merry Christmas!
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

That looks handy. I am always spilling a bit and wrapping rags around it.

And I am always worrying, about everything.
