"Transmission Service required" '05 XC70

Post by Faust »

My transmission has been behaving badly for a couple of months, clunks, jerky shifting etc. No pattern except that temperature "seems" to effect it. Tonight, for the first time in months, my message center started working. It gave me the "Transmission Service required" message. It is cold and dark. Is this message heartening, like low fluid. Or is it disheartening, like time for a rebuild?

Stop using it immediately!!!!!! Check the fluid level and see how it drives. Do a drain and fill and see if it improves further.

My 03 S80 T6 had a gasket leak and I let it go too long. Saw a leak and thought it was power-steering for some reason and let it go. It started to slip shift ever so slightly but since I was not driving it I didn't know till it was too late. I was going to gifted it to a friend's sister. Left it at his home for her to try and he took it out for a spin. The slipping got bad, really bad.

When time permitted I found a pan gasket leak from loose pan bolts. Removed the pan and found large quantity of metal filing / shavings. Flushed the system and changed the filter. It still slips so only I can nurse it around in manual shift mode. I did get several of the Transmission Service Messages before the flush and one time it went into Limp Mode and barely made it back to his home. Drove better after resetting and haven't had the code after the flush but the trans is basically gone. Just a matter of time before it completely quits on the road so it's for emergency use  and will probably need rescuing when needed  .

Read the codes with vida/dice or even a bluetooth ODB2 dongle in the ODB2 port and the Torque app. You could drive to an autoparts store as they can often read codes.

This will let you know if there is just a comms issue between the ATM And CEM. But the symptoms suggest something more serious is happening. Good luck.

As mentioned in the initial post also got the warning. Car no longer does well in Auto so getting use to the Manual Shift. Warning popped up again and it's in Limp Mode or 3rd gear. Started driving in Auto and the revs got too high when the trans slipped. Switched to Manual Shift and still no up or down gears just stuck in 3rd.

Continuing to drive I activated the Torque (Lite). Pushed the Power Button on the Android and got a screen shot of the code then cleared it. Limp Mode gone and continued to drive without issues. The OBDII is plugged in all the time for now.

Purchased 3 this year. C30, S80 and gift to friend. Previously purchased another 2 generics like the 3 from Amazon from eBay and they all worked well. Torque (Lite) is a free download.

P0734 looks to be a 4th gear incorrect ratio code. Assuming this code is correct 4th gear is probably slipping bad enough to set this code. Do you notice a flare from 3 to 4th with a jump in the engine rpm? There's a 4-5 clutch that could have badly worn plates, which would cause the slipping after the 3-4 shift. Another forum member had a 3-4 flare and after taking his transmission apart he too some good photos of badly worn plates in the 4-5 clutch pack. There could also be other possible causes for this code. Do you notice any flaring in other gears?

Here's some photos of a worn and damaged 4-5 clutch from a transmission that had a 3-4 shift flare at one time

Thanks for the link and perfect description of what is happening when driven. Must be driven gently during shifts, lifting throttle for the gear change before reapplying accelerator. In Auto mode it slips constantly so having to use the Manual Mode. In Manual Mode 1st and 2nd sometimes won't up shift but does not slip.

Earlier on removed pan and found large metal bits. As much as the photo below but a quarter in size plus darker fluid and heavier slurry. Did a filter change and complete flush so can nurse it along for a bit but RIP is eminent!
