Transmission failure 1998 V70 XC

Post by V0v0man2907 »

Hey!
I got a V70-XC with a AW50-42LE automatic transmission that is slipping in 1st and second gear when the when the oil is warm. Does any one have experience with this problem? Is the clutches worn out? Can there be a easey fix or is the transmission just worn out?

Thanks for answers

When was the oil last changed? Before assuming the worst, a transmission oil change should be done. Do not have it pressure flushed. There is a recommended change method to change the oil requiring one of the transmission cooler lines being removed.

You should get new 'o' ring seals for the connection to the radiator and make sure the clip is fitted the correct way around. You can re-use the original, but use a zip-tie around it to prevent it coming loose.

You can do the drain and fill process too, but that only changes about 1/3rd of the fluid and takes more changes to get it clean. At the state your transmission is at now I would recommend the full flush before assuming the trans has failed.

Oh, Neil. You said flush when you meant exchange, unless that's some sort of Canadianism. ;-)

By the way, I have a Canadian grandchild coming in late May!

Congrats on the forthcoming grandchild!

We can agree to differ. I still call it a flush even in UK terms. Exchange is a good way to look at it too. Flush because you are flushing the old fluid out by pouring new stuff in, just like a coolant flush. Anyway, either way, swap all the old fluid out. :D

I have had success fixing this by treating the seals with conditioner.

Add a few ounces of B-12 or SeaFoam. Drive it right away, then for a few days normally. Then swap the fluid and either use the DexIII + Lubegard red, or use some Lubegard ATF (sometimes pricey). The solvents will condition the seals, then the ester oil in the Lubegard will continue the process. This does have success if loss of pressure from solenoid seals is the case, and it often is.

Do the PS system the exact same way, too.

Canadians are just careful in general. When you go up North the even exchange our money so they don’t let ours gum up the economy. And they pay you to do it!
