A broken Thermostat can cause increased fuel consumption
Here is my 2010 S80

The Thermostat fails around 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Good luck
Paul
PS get a Volvo or Land Rover Thermostat, aftermarket Thermostats are know to fail early

FYI I recommended that the person that started the thread change the Thermostat
Here is the outcome after replacing the Thermostat

What is the mileage of your XC70?
Assume the car's tune-up is kept up to date: spark plugs, air filters, motor oil, etc I also found my XC70's mileage improved noticeably after changing the transmission fluid.
