Genuine Volvo spark plugs .... ? 96' 850 GLT

I recently purchased a 96' non-turbo 850 (1/17/07), I really enjoy driving it. I test drove a 97' turbo 850 and do not really think that the turbo was really that much quicker. I figured the turbo might require more maintenance. Any way, after only two fill-ups I've gotten about 17-18 mpg in typical suburban driving. Is this about normal? When the weather breaks I plan on checking the cap and rotor and replacing the plugs. I have used Bosch platinum plugs for 12+ years and have never had a problem with them. Groton sells a 5 pack of genuine Volvo plugs for $12.32, would that be a better plug than Bosch, or are there better alternatives? I really can't see paying $6 a plug. Are there other things I could check to improve the gas mileage? Thanks!

AVOID BOSCH PLATINUM PLUGS

Sorry to yell but it is important. Like you, they have been my gold standard on my other cars but they simply will not work on Volvo's. Go with either OEM Volvo plugs or Bosch FR7DC Super Coppers. The gap is also very important, .028. .025 is too small and .030 is too big. The FR7DC's cost like $.99 each.

Here is an example of Bosch platinum 2's after 800 miles.

You also need to avoid Fram oil filters, go with OEM Volvo or Mann.

Stick with Volvo ones, they are pretty much bullet proof, (and usually priced ok too) .
