How to fix coolant getting into the oil.

Post by 02V70 »

I'm waiting on parts to come so I can put my engine back together as I took the head off to change the gasket. I drained the oil, and it looks like this:

Thoughts? It seems there is coolant getting in the oil, but I'm not sure how. I think replacing the head gasket will fix it. The gasket blew when it overheated, and I can see how coolant gets into the cylinder by the break in the head gasket, but not the oil. How bad does this oil look? In total, about 2 gallons and a little more came out. is this around the oil capacity? I also stuck a magnet in the oil to make sure there were no metal shavings, and it didn't find any. Metal shavings are usually steel/iron right?

After thinking over my initial suggestions I've come to the conclusion it's best for you to physically go to a local indie shop that specializes in Volvos and show them those pictures and let them tell you what they think. Just Google Volvo in your area and check the shops rating.

You have a liter or two of coolant in 6 liters of oil. The head gasket sill fix that as Long as the head of block is not cracked, a rare occurrence.

Flush the cooling system with lots of water and look got traces of oil. A couple of oil changes will take care of the engine side

For flushing out the oil, can I use old engine oil to do that?

Drop the pan, clean it out, attach back w/o sealant, flush the engine with any cheapest oil of good enough viscosity (Amazon 5w30), drop the pan, clean it out, install, now properly. Use new oil filter with each oil change through the process. Use new sump o-rings. Replace oil cooler just in case (needs two o-rings), Behr is OE and affordable.

It is a perfect time to replace the rod bearings, if you want to go that deep.

Might also be a good idea to check both fluids after running for a bit, and potentially do another swap after putting some miles on following the flushes.

If you check them and both are indistinguishable from normal, then you can probably skip the early fluid changes. The check is the important part, and you can verify then that your gasket job is solid as well.

When you say flush the engine, do you mean to put oil in with the oil drain plug/screw off, or do I start the engine, run it for a bit, then drain again?

Have you checked to see if your radiator and trans fluid is okay also. Since it overheated the pressure could possibily compromise the radiator? The trans fluid is also cooled by the radiator's trans cooler section.

You can use old engine oil. Run engine at idle for 5 minutes till the it is mixed (check) and then light driving for a few mile and drain. If you have more used oil I would recommend using it for a second flush before spending money on fresh oil. Would buy the cheapest oil filter and replace for each used engine oil flush.

Is radiator fluid coolant? Also for flushing the cooling system, would I fill it up, run for a bit, then drain it like the oil, or put water in it while it is draining out. It is safe to use water without coolant in it right?
