ETM Problems (I'm in a bind!) - 1999 Volvo V70 T5 Manual - UK

Post by jamesdc »

Hi All,

I have been battling my problematic ETM (I think) for a while now, and I could really do with some advice. Below I have tried to list out as much as I can about the problems I am facing and what steps I have taken to resolve them. I have a couple more tests to do (listed below) when I get back to my parents where the car is being stored. Can anyone help me make an informed decision on what to do next?

Symptoms:

Pre-rebuild (ECU Testing)
- Intermittent ETS lamp and slight stumble just before illumination
- ECM-91A7
- NO limp home mode
- ECM-261A Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 1 - Upper Limit (very intermittent - more common on LPG)

Post-rebuild (ECU Testing)
- Hunting for idle after codes cleared - settles sometimes (as it learns?)
- Surging while driving all the time
- Intermittent ETS light
- ECM-91B7
- NO limp home mode
- ECM-261A Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 1 - Upper Limit (very intermittent)

ETM Details:

White Label Magneti Marelli

Part Numbers (From Label)
  • 1103DJR79
  • 99W310101
  • 9186793
  • 65CFM2
  • AH.0002030.J
Part Numbers (Software)
  • 09458345 A (ETM - ECU Diagnostic Software Number)
  • 0009497924 B (ETM - Software Part Number)
  • 229,000 Miles
  • No sweep test available (older software)
Diagnostic Steps Taken:
  • Checked for MAF codes - None
  • Checked for misfire codes - None
  • Sent ETM to ECU Testing for rebuild
    - Inbound Test - No Faults
    - Rebuilt anyway (Sacer unit - not sure what else)
    - Outbound Test - No Faults
  • Full Battery Test (Halfords) - Battery OK
  • Voltage Testing
    - Pin 6 to positive battery terminal - same as battery
    - Pin 5 to negative battery terminal - no resistance (good ground?)
  • Cleaned Ground Connection and Refitted
  • Removed and Cleaned ETM and Lubricated Shaft
  • Cleaned ETM Connectors with Electrical Contact Cleaner
  • Replaced Throttle Pedal with Used (EBay)
  • Removed Fuse 2 (ETM Fuse) with ignition on, engine off and re-installed - Clicks once, whines, clicks again. All within 10 seconds.
  • Held throttle in FIXED POSITION against a block and created the attached graph.
Note - see throttle desired position fluctuating despite pedal being in one position
Note - both throttle position potentiometers seem relatively close to each other to me?

Diagnostic Steps Remaining:

Replace Engine Management Relay
Run wire between fuse and ETM plug
Check voltage across pins 5+6
Check voltage from fuse #2 to negative battery terminal

Options Remaining:
  1. Return rebuilt unit for refund - still broken
  2. Return rebuilt unit for refund and Pay Volvo dealer for diagnostics + new ETM + fitting + software (~£500 GBP)
  3. Pay Volvo to install upgraded software on rebuilt unit
  4. Return rebuilt unit for refund, pay for XeMODeX pre-programmed replacement ($829 USD or £635.91 GBP)
  5. Wait for my Volvo friend to break his early 1999 V70 T5 Automatic (mine is a manual) for me to test his used ETM and Throttle Pedal - no idea when that’ll be.

Keep your eye out on eBay for the late 2014- Volvo replacement version. It will bolt in and is contactless.

Your 99 throttle body is certainly past its due date, at 239k miles

Thanks Abscate! I think I am going for a refund of the rebuilt unit and going brand new from Volvo - its ~£400 GBP all in. I'm 99% certain it is my ETM - especially if it is the original from 1999! Not heard of them lasting that long with that many miles before.

There is a strong statistical bias on Fora to early failures. In the vernacular, person has a 50,000 mile failure , comes to Forum to kvetch, and thus early failures are seen. I gathered data on this years ago and reached an estimate of MTBF between 150-200k miles.

I have replaced my ETM now with a brand new unit from Volvo - however, much to my and the volvo dealership surprise, the car drove wonderfully WITHOUT software! What?! The car wouldnt connect to their new VIDA system but the car runs perfect without software loaded onto the ETM, even cruise control works. No idea what is going on!

The latest , 2014 version of the ETM is built by Volvo in Sweden and apparently has robust software that works across the platform. Glad this worked well.

Photo request…if you are out and about can you take a picture of your Volvo at the Dudley Hippodrome, slated for demolition ?

It’s historical to my family.

Hi Everyone

So I would like to join as well to the ETM group with my 2001 V70 T5
Now as I figured, my yellow label MM ETM sensor 1 is gone, car still going, sweep test confirms in Vida s sensor 1 is the problem.
However online I found a VOLVO ETM from 2017 with the another thread mentined product code : 36050564 (hall sensor volvo original)
the other product code is 8644345

In Vida i got the following product codes
Serial number:010406616056
HW number: 0008644347
Diagnostic number: 0009207849
software number: 003078580

Is there any hope this 2017 ETM would work for me?
As I understand (after days of reading the forum) I have the latest software in the ETM (got sweep test in vida) as such the 2017 must have the latest SW as well(2006sw)
my only concern as my part number 0008644347 is for turbo only(as i got research over google)
and the 8644345 seems to be an NA engine ETM
Is these are correct?

any help will be apriciated!

Thanks!

Well, I remember that turbo and na etms software doesn't match. With these “newer ones” I dunno.

That would be great if somebudy could shed some light on this as I could savce some time and money.
So the ultimate question is: Is the new type volvobranded (no MM label) with hall efect sensor ETMs are plug and play across the board or not?
