S40 Rear Brake Pad noise

Post by stuntflyer »

Hi - new to the forum. I am sure there must be a post on here about this already as I have seen elsewhere many complaints about the rear brake pad noise on the early S40s.

So I bought a 2005 S40 - great little car, except for the flipping noise that comes from the rear brakes when backing up, and generally when the brakes are cold.

I have tried grinding down the edge of the pads (suggested by someone elsewhere), cleaning the caliper and carrier assemblies, removing rust, using "anti squeal paste", greasing the caliper pins, and nothing seems to solve this noise issue. I am about to try a different set of pads, which, brings me to my question.

I'd like to know what pads others have used on the rear brakes of the S40 that do NOT squeal like this. It was apparently a problem recognized by Volvo and they changed the type of pads they used. Just looking for advice to ensure I buy the correct ones.

Thanks in advance.
Steve
