I had the same problem with my ’01 S60. The dealer flushed the transmission fluid and it has been symptom-free for 25k mi. Watch out for that $25/qt. OEM fluid, though! Maybe I’ll DIY next time…
- Vacuum Transmission Fluid 2001-2007 Volvos
MVS Volvo Forums Contributor Jimmy57 and others discuss how to get transmission fluid out of 2001-2007 V70 and XC70, and other P2 type Volvos. If you have no way to put car up on stands or on ramps then you could suck it out through dipstick. I have had these transmissions apart and the dipstick is a straight path to bottom of trans. IF you use suction then the front of the car being even 2 inches lower than rear (rear tires run up on two 2x4 pieces) would let fluid run to the front where the dipstick is located for a more complete capture. Get 4 quarts. IT will take 3 1/2 more or less. I would put 3 1/2 in and then run it and check it. The funnel needs to be 1/2…

- 2002 Volvo AW55-50SN Transmission Disengages While Driving
The disengagement feels like something is not locking up, like the converter. The disengagement happens more in the city when I am starting and stopping, but it still happens on the freeway. For example on the freeway at 70 mph, the car all of a sudden goes into limp mode or the trans disengages. At this moment, the car starts coasting and I step on the gas, but obviously no response - the rpms goes up slightly to sometimes to 2 or 3000 rpms, and then the car kicks back into gear. This disengagement period happens for a minute or it can go on for 5, or 10 miles.
