The instrument cluster on that car is the master control module for the communications network and is also the vehicle ID module. You can't swap a used one in.

Not with a 2000
I put a 2000 V70R blue gauge cluster in my 99T5 with no issues
If it's a EURO 2000 (P2), then yes I would agree with you, but not in ANY Gen 1
Any 1999 or 2000 cluster is interchangeable, 98s are not

That would be the issue. I did not know that. I though they could still be swapped in 2000 like the 99s.jimmy57 wrote:The instrument cluster on that car is the master control module for the communications network and is also the vehicle ID module. You can't swap a used one in.

They can be swapped if the build range and the equipment level is the same so all the modules are the same software structure range. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes yes but if you ever attempt to do anything with the ETM then an Xemodex ETM for instance won't work as the software structure range is not compatible with the info you provide them.
There are quite a number of modules on any of the networked volvos that can be interchanged and mostly work if the software load in the "new" module is close to the removed one. The problems that result when they are mismatched often won't show up until certain conditions are met. The problem is almost guaranteed to bite your ass completely off if you ever need software loaded or certain other vehicle ID keyed activities.
You will not be able to add a key or a remote after doing one of these swaps as the software VIDA will obtain will be for the ID number stored in the cluster and it will not be the software for the VGLA module on the car. There may be an aftermarket tool that MIGHT get around this (Autologic if they have resolved some legal issues with Volvo).

Gen 1s are not networked
Except for KEYS and the ETM (and even that can sometimes be used without software)

They have only the high speed network and are not completely networked with both a high speed and low speed and other networks like P2 and every new platform since but the ECM, ETM, ABS, CDM (instrument cluster), and the TCM are networked.
Actually the VGLA isn't networked but the ID for keys and remotes is keyed to VIN out of car (again Autologic and something else out there may have found an end run around Volvo software matching and ordering system).
Swapping the pieces that will plug n play is fine if no repairs requiring software from Volvo. The ETM extended warranty brought up some ugly side effects of swapped modules. A swapped cluster from a non turbo car with Denso ECM will get ETM and other bits of software for Denso compatibility and then VIDA sees unmamtched modules and re-registers the modules and gets an even bigger software file to upgrade the "new" modules and then tries to load them and the Bosch software ECM gets really pissed off and the ECM usually can't be recovered.
If you never have any issues where keys, remotes, or other software access processes are done then you're good to go.
