2001 V40 high rpm

Post by mattporter637 »

When I start the car it will often rev to between 2000 and 3000 rpm then will level off to idle. When i put it in gear it stays level. I then begin to drive and if I take my foot of the gas to coast it will rev up and then down and will continue this until I come to a stop. It does not do it at low speeds, just around 30 mph and up. If I let off the gas on the freeway it does not surge in rpm but disengages slowly and is not smooth at all when disengaging and then reengaging once the gas is pressed again. Further, when I let off the gas in the city, I have tried to put it in neutral to see what would happen and it just surges the rpm up and down dramatically. The same happens when I put it in park. I got a code (P0507) which came up as an IAC valve issue or a throttle plate issue. Before I spend the money on parts I was hopping to get some feedback from you guys. Please let me know what you think is going on and the possible solutions. Thanks in advance.

The IAC is very easy to clean. It is right on the front of the engine. Two torx bolts and it will come off. Be careful to not damage the gasket, or you can always get a new one. Spray the crap out of it with come electrical contact cleaner and let it soak in there for a while. Drain and give it at least a few hours to dry out.

I wouldn't worry about the throttle just yet, since you may have fixed the issue with the IAC clean. Of course if the clean doesn't work, you can get a new one. Keep us posted.
