RPM range for 4bangers/ valve adjusment in order?

Post by 98T5 »

I've been noticing since owning my 940 that the rpm's don't switch out until about 3,000-4,000 range. Is this normal or is it time for a valve adjustment. What are the RPM ranges in bewteen shifts on these cars from the factory?

Are you saying the transmission doesn't upshift until that RPM range?
Valve adjustment on the engine would not be a factor for the transmission shift points unless the engine ran VERY weak as a result. Very unlikely.
There is a cable on the throttle cable spool that goes to transmission. THis is the control for trans shifting. IF that cable is hanging and doesn't smoothly and smartly retract in to its housing when you open and close throttle then that is the place to start.

The RPM when shifts occur is progressively higher with higher throttle application when functioning properly.

IF this is not what you are asking then explain better.

I think you nailed it. The car shifts fine, it just doesn't change gears from 1-2-3-4 until the rpm's are like 3000 or higher. when I used to own VW Beetles this much RPMs between shifts meant my valves were in need of adjustment so the compression can be maximized. Moving like a snail in traffic and on hills right now.

Currently, the car runs smooth with a slight "tap" from the valve cover, hardly noticeable while idling, but I'm wondering if I should just do the valve adjustment anyway since I don't know when it was last done before I bought it(same with timing chain).

But will go out here and check that tranny wire you're talking about first and see if that helps. thanks.

Question:

What are you shift points like? at what RPM?

I adjusted that wire, I guess it's the kickdown switch? and it worked! :D

car shifts out at about 2300-2500 RPMS now! and in 4th gear it cruises at around 3000 RPMS. I knew there had to be more horses in this thing that what I've been gettin' lately.

Before, the car would rev up to 70mph but felt like I was going 40mph. NOW, 60mph feels like 60mph!! :D

The 940 used to jerk and starve for fuel at high rev just to change gears, it didn't do that at all this morning on my way to work, and I barely had to use the OD button to gain speed just to climb hills and merge in traffic. Big improvement. It's changing great now but I want it to change out just a bit faster still and I still have a few cm's of adjustment on the screw, so I will do that tonight.
