My 1989 740 wagon just did the same thing . . .took it to volvo and they said it was a overdrive relay causing the solenoid not to activate, and possibly the solenoid itself. The total repair cost the dealseship quoted was $470, but then i called around and found that most transmission shops would do that repair for $200-$300, so i picked the car up from volvo and am taking to one of the transmission shops tomorrow.
