Approximately, 15,000 miles ago, my 1993 850 GLT failed to engage in reverse and "freewheeled" in low. This was an abrupt breakdown in the transmission functions. My dealer informed me that the transmission needed replaced and needed $3,000.00 to repair. Volvo 850's were notorious for this problem and Volvo will not stand behind their automobiles. Although the transmissions are labeled identical, I have been advised to replace my transmission with a newer V70. Apparently, Volvo did make some subtle component changes later and circumvented their error. Only food for thought, but it is strongly suggested that these transmissions not be "rebuilt," but replaced. A used product may be the only feasible solution for each of us.
