I have the high pitch noise too! And it comes on and off, regularly when A/C is on. But my A/C is working fine. I only have 82K miles. I have heard that the evaporator on 850's is a very common problem and 80% of Volvo 850s have needed a replacement at least once. I do not know of similiar problems with V70s.
