We have a '97 850GLE that has a high pitched, intermittent noise. It only occurs when the car is moving. We've never heard it at rest despite reving the engine. This is a '98 a/c system that was put in at 50,000 miles, fortunately under warranty (after much arguing). I can stop the noise for a short time by turning off the ac when the noise starts. Have you tried this to see if the noise is any less often? I talked with local Volvo dealer this morning and they wanted to evacuate the system and recharge it - for $160. They also mentioned replacing a tube in the system as a fix. I'd like to know if any harms is occurring because of the noise.
