Hello!
Both of those point to a vacuum leak in my mind, at least. Check your hoses and replace. For the 0440, it can be an idea to go over all hoses and fittings in the evap system, and also replace the valve.

Re: '96 850 Heating and AC Problems
Chances are the switch has gummed up or has failed. If you have the ECC unit it is easy to swap out if you get one from the junkyard. It may be a combo issue you may also have a power resistor issue too. If you have an MCC (it won't say Auto on the panel anywhere) then it may be the switch.

Usually when the ABS module fails it will often trip the engine check light too. 2) Ignition switch failing. Try carefully wwiggling the key when car is running and see what happens. Natur...

Re: '96 850 Check Engine Light
In my experience, P0172 is always caused by a severe vacuum leak. Check your vacuum lines. With the engine running, you might be able to hear a wooshing or hissing sound to help you track down the leak. What rpm does it idle at? P0440 is usually the J and L hose on the charcoal canister. Replacing t...

Re: '96 850 Heating and AC Problems
Find a new unit at a junk yard or pick&pull. It might be possible to tear your unit apart and repair the switch, but that would take quite some time and I am sure you want heat tomorrow.
