Be sure its fused, I did that when installing a backlit turbo gauge.
Its probably better to fix the source of the problem though.

Lots of miles should not be a problem. Lots of time sitting could be more of a problem if fuel 'varnish' is coating the inside. IIRC, there is a circlip on the trans side of the factory axle. Without the circlip, the axle can come out if the inner race of the carrier bearing is not a tight fit on the shaft of the axle.
