Get the front end up on jackstands and turn the wheel from lock to lock feeling for weirdness in the rack. Have some one do it while you watch underneath , inspecting ball joints and tie rod ends for ease of movement. If there was a big side impact the rack could be bent. That’s a nasty job

I did all four on my '97 855 about 7 or 8 years ago. The inners were in good shape at that time and could probably have been left alone.

I replaced all the hoses on my '97 855 to reduce the chances of sudden coolant loss while out and about, potentially leading to engine failure.

For rubber hoses imo it is less the mileage, more the age and maybe heat cycles(?) that will kill them.
