I have a theory which is that there are some air vents behind the dash where the radio is and Volvo used the foam gaskets in them. There's a huge heater air box directly behind the radio with foam gaskets, that you can obviously see behind the radio, and even see that parts are missing or crumbling....

The 2 main issues are hardened valve stem seals, or worn turbo seals.
