A helpful person on the Swedishbricks site sent me the Volvo document that explains the required alignment when replacing the struts on a P3 Volvo: I removed the strut, did the required alignment , reinstalled and the tapping noise was gone !

Strut bearing would be my bet. Great photo on alignment procedure. Fcp euro has a detailed video on similar job but on xc60 in case you need reference. Sorry for your time.
