Re: It's time to start bulking up on 850s

This is something I worked on several years ago - a custom cold air intake for my 850 Turbo. I built the original input model in cardboard to verify fit, then a nicer one out of black foamcore, then built it digitally in Rhino. I even made a presentation panel for it. I haven't messed with it in yea...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Installed one of the oil cooler coolant lines, as well as the front engine mount yesterday. Today, I buttoned up the top end and got set up for the timing belt installation. I have to epoxy a few breaks in the front cover first. 20210917_174426.jpg 20210917_174859.jpg 20210917_211333.jpg 20210917_21...

Re: Is the 850 becoming a classic?

Who would've thought at the time that small-block Malibus and Fairlanes and Dusters would ever be valuable? They were the cars you didn't REALLY want, but fell into because you couldn't afford the big-block. I can see the basic 850 being valuable as an example of the Golden Age of Automobiles that w...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

These engine rebuild posts are really helpful as an anatomy lesson in our engines. It looks similar to my 2000 V70, so its helping me get more familiar with the components. For instance, I never knew about the hard coolant line coming off the coolant pump until seeing these pics. Thanks for them. Y...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

This is the car the S60R B5254T engine I'm building is going into. 1995 854 Turbo. 253,000 and change miles on the chassis. I'm pretty sure the head gasket in the B5234T blew somewhere around 230,000 miles, but only became a real smoker around 250,000. Still drove fine though, but Virginia does insp...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Finished assembling the turbo tonight. If you're going to build it piece-by-piece on the engine, make sure to attach the blowoff valve before you rotate the compressor housing into final position. Otherwise, you won't be able to get to the three bolts. I used the wastegate actuator to determine the ...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

Moving on to the intake. Yes, purists may scoff and tell me I need to use an actual gasket on the throttle body but I say EH, this engine's full of chemgasket. A little more will be fine. 20210920_213321.jpg 20210920_213833.jpg 20210920_214205.jpg 20210920_214219.jpg 20210920_214355.jpg 20210920_214...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

What engine management will you be running on this car? Not planning on keeping it M4.3, I assume based on the Bosch ETB. Coming along really nicely! Thank you! Since I can't run the CVVT functions with the B5234T's ECU, I bought a computer from a 2006 S60R and an engine wiring harness from a 2005 ...

Re: Nevada1906 1995 850 S60R m56 build thread

Moving on to the coolant bypass line. I measured the tubing, cut it to length and taped it. Obviously this is just the mockup. I still have to solder the lines together, flare the ends and get some insulated brackets to hold the line securely. 20211017_143921.jpg 20211017_144340.jpg 20211017_144626....

Re: Nevada1906 1995 850 S60R m56 build thread

I think I figured out how to to reinstall the CVVT hubs. When I bought the engine, it arrived with the hubs in this position. While these pictures are from yesterday, they show the hubs as they'd been on the engine since it's last timing belt job. 20211202_202809.jpg 20211202_202725.jpg My thinking ...
