How do you car gurus know all the exacting information required to do this kind of work and have access to all of these interesting parts (old S60R engine) and tools? I'm fighting to overcome nerves to change my timing belt and you are rebuilding multiple Frankenstein engines. I'm amazed.
Just take the timing belt job slow and steady, one step at a time, and you'll be fine. But first, read the procedure at least half a dozen times. Take notes if you have to. That's what I do.

As far as the knowledge base, just start with one single piece of information and branch out from there. Add pieces of knowledge by working backward, working forward and working sideways. It really is like a puzzle, and you have to start somewhere. Doesn't matter where, just pick a point.

Remember, the hardest part of any project is wanting to do it.

Nevada1906 wrote: 18 Aug 2021, 19:44 After my B5234T's head gasket blew, I decided to upgrade. I bought a B5254T from a 2004 S60R to use as an intermediate engine while I build the B5234T into a hot-rod plant. The idea is that everything between the head and oil pan will be built 2.3 Turbo and everything on either side will be built S60R.

While I'm reassembling the B5254T so I can actually use it in the car, I'm also building up the short block for the B5234T.

What can I say? The garage is too dirty and dark for proper engine assembly. Besides, the workpieces need to be within a certain temperature range to get accurate measurements with the micrometers and the garage is 90 degrees.

Unfortunately, while I was moving the crank from one counter to the other, gravity decided to "help."

Oh well, I still have three working burners

However, now I can tell people I once dropped a Volvo crank through a stove.
Man, I got a good laugh out of that! The dangers of engine building in the kitchen...

Google is your friend! Pretty much any mechanical specs you could need are out there somewhere, on some forum. Workshop manuals, VIDA, etc. are extremely useful tools for everything from the most basic repairs to complete rebuilds of various components.
I’m self taught. Lots of reading on car forums since I was probably 14 has me doing just about everything imaginable on these cars.

The current project is swapping the motor in this Kia Forte. The old one has the typical Hyundai rod bearing rattle. I have to say, this is by FAR the easiest vehicle I’ve ever worked on. And also one of the newest. If I started earlier in the day and was feeling 100% (been sick the past week, doing much better now fortunately!) I probably could have had it done tonight.

Speaking of spare S60R engines, I managed to finagle this into the XC90 to ship off to its new owner in Texas. So far, I highly recommend Fastenal for freight shipping! Ridiculously good pricing and super easy process.

I also had the joy of experiencing my first broken accessory bracket. I’ve been lifting these engines by this bracket for years, and this is the first one to snap on me. I’ve heard about it, but never experienced it first hand. Won’t be doing that again!

Damn. That was probably the unobtanium bracket, too.

There are some cool dudettes and dudes here. I didn’t know Diddley about Volvo service until 2013, when I found MVS , and decided to refurb my T5 instead of dumping it

If you want to bring Green over here for an evening we will rip that timing belt and pump job in two hours, tops…..

New topic,,, Neil , I’m done with this rear caliper, where do I send it ??
I know people that'd try to warranty that caliper...

Added the front cover backing piece.

Had to glue a couple of cracks, but it's ready now. Clips and all.

Superb work. You are doing exactly what Ive always wanted but never has the time to do it. By the time I get around to rebuild my parts car engine, there probably wont be any rebuild kits left.
Hey, thanks! Just doing what I love!

What I've been doing with all the parts I didn't have the machine shop clean is to soak them for 3 or 4 days in a solution of Simple Green or Purple Power and water.

At that point, the gunk either rinses off under the faucet, or by scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

Thanks for making this build a separate thread. Would you be able to collect ALL the posts I made on this subject here, so this story can all be in one spot from start to finish? They start on page 577 of the "What did you do today?" thread.
