The sponginess in the brake pedal has nothing to do with the vacuum part of the brakes. With no vacuum in the system,the brake pedal should be rock hard. Have you changed your brake fluid every 2-3 years? Were the calipers both looking like mirrors on both sides? A sticking caliper will never bleed ...

Ive now converted 5 high mileage cars to synthetic and found no change in leakage and reduced usage internally, so I don't buy that everything on the internet is accurate.

Charles - you can use that CRC cleaner with turbo engines. The turbocharger is upstream of the TB, so unless time reversal comes into play you can't get the cleaner into the turbo - there isnt enough difference between the engines of turbo and NA cars to merit that warning. In late 1998 the damper and temp control modules were replaced by a single motor (9134729)doing both functions on the driver side. This was used 1999-2000 then replaced on P2
