Whichever starter you use, that little wire must be intact. Examine it closely to see if it's corroded and ready to fail. When I had a "no start" condition, I read tons of threads about it. Here's every lead I found back then. Research them to see what you might find. Hold the key on start...

Does it crank and squeal, or just squeal?

If it is a stick shift and in gear then yes is the answer. If it is an auto then no. However, if it is an auto, you could turn the engine with a wrench and the crank pulley bolt.

If you had the plugs out when you tried to turn the engine, you are likely correct.
