It could be the timing belt idler pulley.
Take off all the V belts to test this theory.

If you take off the belts and they look bad, this would be a great time to replace the belts.
As I recall, removing the fan blade is a big help in changing the belts.

Also look around for any loose electrical connectors. These can get missed in any major parts removal/replacement process.

Over the years, I purchased from Dave Barton an engine wiring harness, window scraper rubbers, and Prancing Moose stickers.
He used to (maybe still) would frequent the southern cal salvage yards and gather many Volvo parts.
