Check with son if he had recently filled tank and just spilled some or had the slight overflow. The drain boot drains it under the car bit it will stink a bit

Do yourself a favor and fix it right. Fuel leaks are not self sealing. Give it proper condition-hot/cold, full tank-and it will be back. I would buy new O-ring and plastic "cap screw ring" and replace everything to assure worry free driving.
