Re: I think I spoke too soon (alternator) [got it—lesson learned]
So this morning the difference between old and new kept nagging at me and my mind went back to a particular moment during replacement—when I'd eyeballed the pigtail and the nut and they looked "pretty good" and then I'd bolted them on. I tore back into things, took off the nut and the pigt...

Re: Cracking on brake hose
They're not "OMG do right now, do not wait 10 minutes" emergency, but you should put them on the "do at next paycheck" or similar list, i.e. days-weeks, not months-years. It's super easy in theory. In practice, every time I have to do these, I end up swearing because the way they...

Re: Okay, engine mounts or exhaust leak? (And if so, where?)
So, follow up, I had FCP Euro rush me a new set of Hutchinson engine mounts. And it appears to have solved the problem. I've only put 10 miles on it so far, but it seems to be very quiet again, no hint of that earthquake-like rumble. Strange thing, I had put an entirely new set of Hutchinson engine ...

Re: Haldex fuse?
Putting the car on stands and tearing apart half the bottom, can do. Remembering what an owner's manual is for, that's difficult.
I honestly hadn't thought of the owners manual, and had also totally forgotten about the fuses in the rear. Thanks!

Re: Drive shaft vibration is back.
Okay, it's been a few days since I could take a look at this, but today I have a free Saturday, so I got back underneath the car and took another look at things. Where the carrier bracket meets the bottom of the car, there are four bolts holding it in, and those four bolts pass through not just larg...

Re: 2006 S60 2.5t door lock actuator acting up: junkyard or dealer?
Have two P2 XCs (2002 and 2007) and as both are well into the hundreds of thousands of miles, have had to replace 2x door latch mechanisms and 2x tailgate latches due to weak actuation. For the very first one, I spent about $60 to get one on eBay, but after that I got over my laziness and went to th...

Re: Possible Haldex Failure 2003 XC70
If it does come down to a $2k repair, I'd probably just spend a fourth of that and have them pull off the prop shaft and rear CV axles entirely and run as a FWD car. I'm told you can even do that if the angle gear goes bad (just pull the angle gear as well, since the CV axles pass through it, appare...

Re: Possible Haldex Failure 2003 XC70
Fascinating thing, I heard a lot about torque steer before driving for a while w/o my shaft, but I didn't find it to be really much of an issue. Don't know how this suggests my car might be broken.
Or maybe I'm not just sporty enough in my driving. I thought it was fine.

Re: '02 V70XC: TCM update + valve body questions
Okay, so surprising update: I decided there's no point in playing around with things any farther if I don't even have the latest software installed, so even though I was dubious it would have any effect, I paid for a VIDA 3-day subscription and bought the TCM update. (Vida 3-day: $80 or so, TCM upda...

Re: Help! Bricked CEM, possibly other modules
SUCCESS I wish I could say exactly what was "the difference..." but I honestly don't know. I think your suggestion yesterday @vtl to pull the cable before closing the advanced dialog to remain in programming mode was the first key. Before that, it was just erroring out immediately, over an...
