2006 S60 2.5t door lock actuator acting up: junkyard or dealer?

Post by Scruffy »

Hey everyone, just wanted to get some input here. My driver's door lock actuator is going out, as it works about half the time I press the button, and the lock pin pops up and down a couple times whenever I unlock.

Looks like I need a new actuator, but the dealer wants well over 300 bucks for it. I can get a junkyard one for about 100, all in. Thing is, I can't tell if the junkyard one is good or not, and I don't want to have to do it twice. Would such a part be smart to buy used, or am I wasting my money?

Junkyard parts usually come with a 30 day return policy over here and one yard does a 90 day, but all only have an in-store credit if returned. A used one is an unknown. Can't say I have heard of many P2 ones failing. I'm sure they do. It depends on how adverse you are to having to do the job twice?

It is likely that the actuator itself is not the issue, but the electronics in the DDM failing. I had the same phenomena (up/down erratic behavior) a bunch before it just completely failed one day.

I would replace the whole module make sure you get one with the exact same P/N. Junkyard or eBay are best for this as it's like a $400 part new, not worth it.

I'm leaning towards actuator, because the problems are only with the lock motor. The windows and mirrors function normally... Too bad I have no way to test it

Door lock actuator in my area's junk yard is about $16, not $100.
Search eBay too.

Another option is lock the car mechanically, i.e., turning the door lock CW or CCW yourself.

The door lock actuators didn't change software compatibility or electrical connector from 2001 to 2007. I just tried finding the application chart for a new latch mechanism on FCP Euro and had no luck. I used two 2007 pick-u-pull junkyard latch mechanisms on my son's 2001 V70 and they worked fine. About $15 each here in the Detroit area. The replacement latches eliminated the error codes inside VIDA and the occasional unlocked doors.

Have two P2 XCs (2002 and 2007) and as both are well into the hundreds of thousands of miles, have had to replace 2x door latch mechanisms and 2x tailgate latches due to weak actuation.

For the very first one, I spent about $60 to get one on eBay, but after that I got over my laziness and went to the wrecking yards to pull them myself. It's actually something like a 10 minute job to pull one, and I think I paid about $15 for the other door latch and about $20 each for the two tailgate latches and the self-pull yards.

All have worked fine and are still in service. I had some mental resistance doing the swap myself on the first one (I'm twitchy about working on interior stuff, I'm much more comfortable with nuts and bolts in the engine bay) but at least on the XCs, the door latches and the tailgate latch are something like 10 minute swap jobs, esp. once you've already done one.
