Simple Green is pretty mild, but I’ve found that it works pretty well. My go-to degreaser is Oil Eater. You might need a stronger solvent to strip that though.

It's really common to pinch that o-ring into the back of the water pump. What I've seen recommended is to remove the water pump to ensure the o-ring seats into place without rolling the edge and pinching it.

I believe you can depress the clip from the side towards the windshield and wiggle it out without damage. At least I think that's how I got them out of my V70R when I did the headliner.
