Well, turns out it was not a bad axle but a bad wheel bearing. On the rear bearings, the ABS sensor ring is integral with the rear of the bearing. This had failed and was separated from the bearing. Hence the nasty noises.
New wheel bearing and all is good.

Did the work myself. It took about 1 1/2 hours. With a beer break.
