This is a thing. I have had it happen when working on a car and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery on the first attempt to start the car. Not just once but several times on 98 and on cars.

Try manually locking and locking the driver's door lock with the key (don't use the fob). Then try and start it. Something has tripped your car's security system and it has immobilized the car.
