The hose next to the oil cap is part of the PCV system. It connects a vent on the head to the oil vapor separator box on the side (front) of the cylinder block. It's a major air leak in your system.

It -could- be two burned valves in two adjacent cylinders, but that’s highly unlikely. A “leak down” test will tell you where the air is leaking out. You can do this. Do you need the car anytime soon? Slow & careful is my pattern on new things. DIYs are invaluable. Ask questions here. Everything...

Front sway bar end link? I had a loose fastener there and it made a loud click / pop at every bump.

Yes. Pretty expensive unit, then a lot more labor to install, pipe, and exhaust it. More efficient, yes.
