How does one remove those plastic dust covers on the A/C recharge ports?...

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site!

The AC port should just be a simple twist off cap. Turn counter-clockwise. It's the one in the front of the car near the serpentine belt.

Thanks...It's a 2001 XC70, my bad...(grin)...The high port up front in the hood striker plate and the low port is below the power steering reservoir, and, as your said, near the serpentine belt...

The caps have 3/4" wrench flats but turning them does nothing...A "thump" can be felt as the cap is turned, as if it were bouncing over a bayonet-lock pin, but it does not come off...Pullin upward on it, using the jaws of a small gear puller held in my hands, puts a tremendous strain on the A/C tubing and I am afraid it will be pulled loose from the condenser...

I'm gonna move this to the 2001 and newer section then, hopefully one of those guys will know immediately how to get this off.

It is a screw off cap. the problem is most likely that it was over tightened and now the plastic just spins about the brass insert. This happened to me. I carefully took a dremel to the top perimeter of the cap just cutting the plastic and peeling it away. Once out of the way there is a brass six sided insert that is left. just put the proper socket on it and remove. get a new cap and do not over tighten. Hope this helps.
