The two latest problems I have with my 2004 XC90 are significant uneven tire wear at 22K miles and a creaking groaning sound coming from the front axle when the car in breaking and turning going down steep hills at low speeds.
Anyone else have these problems and what was the resolution?
When I took the tires to be replaced ($850 at a tire shop recommended by the dealer), the manager there said that Volvo had a lot of alignment problems with the first years of this car. My tire wear showed excessive wear on the outide of the two front and right rear tires. The car drives straight. I think Volvo should pay to fix the alignment and replace the tires.
The car also makes a low-pitched creaking/groaning sound when I am breaking and turning going down steep hills at low speeds. The dealer said they could not replicate the problem, so I will have to try to find the same hills near them and drive around with their tech. Anyone else have this same problem and/or have any insight into what is causing it?

California XC90, I find your post interesting in that I notice the same tire wear occurring on my '05 XC90 (7600 miles). I took it to the dealer and they did a realignment on it. They found the front-end was out of alignment slightly. I've also come across similar postings about alignment problems I hope this is all a coicedence because this would suck if its an engineering defect!
At this time I don't have any creaking or groaning from the front axle so I can't share any light on that problem.

A Massachusetts XC90 driver I am also having the creaking and groaning, and sometimes a clunk sound intermittenly when I hit the breaks, especially in reverse (pulling into my garage) My dealer also said they could not replicate the problem and that I should drive with the tech. I'm tempted to bring him/her to my house and they can listen while I pull in to my garage!
The first time I brought it in they tightened the suspension, I will say it handles better, but the noise still persists.

Hello, I am French, therefore excuse my very approximate English.
I had the same problem on my XC90 (cracking and problems of alignment), with several return in workshop and adjustments which had not solved anything.

First - I do not own an XC90 but please allow the following.
Shortly after by father bought a new car he noticed the tires were wearing "funny." He was in the tire business so was sensitive to tire wear. The dealer aligned the wheels - several times - and the tires continued with their incorrect wear. He took it to a independent alignment shop and that was the end of the problem. Turns out the manual at the dealer was wrong.
I had a similar problem on my own Audi Quattro. Dealer charged $125 for a 4 wheel alignment and took all day to do it. The tires were ruined driving across country. Upon my arrival in San Diego and new tires, the car was taken to an alignment shop recommended by the local Porsche Club. There was never another problem. Took and hour for a 4-wheel alignment and cost $40.
The fancy $100 alignment machines are - for the most part - smoke and mirrors. Alignment can be accomplished with a string line and a plumb bob. Think of it this way. The lazor light at the axle nearest the light source may only be "off" 1/32". That 1/32 could very well be 3/8s at the axle furtherest away from the light source. Don't be impressed by that fancy machine.
Here's a suggestion. Call the local MB and/or Porsche dealer and ask where they have their vehicles aligned. ...Or call the local MB or Porsche Club and ask them. Take it to where they recommend. Chances are that will fix the problem. As for the creaking and groaning - can't help you. BTW, a corrected alignment will not correct tires that are already incorrectly worn because of the initial alignment error.

To Debbie guest.
When my xc 90 was only one month of use I heard your clunk sound intermittenly when I also hit the breaks, especially in reverse.
The problem was solved putting a rubber rings in same part of the body by the local dealer.

We need to report this to:
www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/home.cfm
Suposidly this website reports the bastards to government agencies and forces or makes the manufacturers correct or recall problematic cars!
I have the same noises and the Volvo here in Honolulu, HI are very lazy and don't fix the problem. Instead they make up stories and first try to blame you like they blamed me for the front tires wearing out when I only had about 12k miles on a tires that should last at the least 25k. I had to argue with the service manager while I was 7 months pregnant. I yelled at him till I was blue!
He did not appologize either!
But I took my car in about 10 times for numerous reasons.
My car had trouble starting. The driver side overhead flap with mirror had a light that would not turn off when I closed the lighted mirror and pushed the flap up. So this drained my battery because lord knows how long it stayed on. That caused my battery to drain therefore had a hard time starting my car in the middle of nowhere and pregnant!
So after they gave me 1001 excuses on the sounds they always sent me home with a bandaid! I just picked up my car again today/yesterday and again they said it was because the steering fluid leaked out and they put more fluid in. However I know the sound will return as it did the last time. Atop of that I now have to go back again because now when I am driving at 20MPH, my car is making a "zig zagg" which sounds like the axle is warped.
I think because they didn't fix the lubrication leak for so long, it has now become a bigger problem with the axle..... and they better fix it or else I will definitely have to seek legal counsel.
I know this is past the lemon law period however I have been complaining about this since I first got the car. Does anyone know what my rights are at this point? I am very upset and would like for them to own up to their defects.!!!
After all, the C70 is expensive and I even paid for the extended warranty and they still treated me like I am an idiot!!
The service people talk like they know more about the problem when they don't even know what causes the problem!
someone please reply if you have any answers! I am so bothered by all this I can't sleep! I loved my car but now I hate it and it now has negative equity because they overcharged me and when I take my car back to possibly get an XC90, they expect me to just turn in my car and start a new lease!!???
after all this......I don't think I would buy a VOLVO AGAIN!!!!
THEIR CARS ARE ALL WRONG AND THEIR SERVICE IS SCARY!!!

I have had a similar problem with my 2004 XC90. There were creaking and groaning noises from the front end. It has been going on for a while. I just brought it in to the dealer and they replaced the strut. It appears to have solved the problem. ($700)
I also had a problem were the power steering fluid leaked out and the car made some funny groaning noises. I never did see any evidence of a leak, so I added some additional power steering fluid and the problem never repeated.
One other problem I ran into was with excessive tire wear. It seems that I have to replace the tires every 20K miles even though they are rated for 60K miles.
