rough (shudders)@ idle / vibrations at idle Help??????????

My 03 V70 2.4T has started vibrating at idle (the glove dept box buzzes and it can be felt through out the car) but is fine when accelerating-it's when you pull to a stop at a light-you can feel the engine idle so rough its almost a shudder then it'll go away - it does not die but the vibrations stay till you accelerate again. We have recently had work done on it for this-the mechanics gave it an software upgrade and said it was fine now(obviously not). This car has only 23k miles. Any one else had this and what could it be?

Check your motor mounts for deterioration. They are rubber "isolators" that hold the engine. The one on the top should be easy to see. Two beneath the engine are much harder to see, but possible if you get under the car.

Longshot for such a new car, but a possibility.

Check your RPMs...mine did exactly that, and I noted the RPMs would drop to 3-400 then pick back up if it didn't die. I just paid to have it repaired, dealer said it was a vacuum leak allowing it to run too rich. I haven't driven it yet, so we'll see!

Check the fuel injection system, a dirty pin might be the cause of it, it happened to my 00 S70 AWD once.

Or it may be your EMT, especially since it's newer than a '99 model. See these links for further discussion.

My money wouldn't be on the ETM. That issue was corrected for the most part starting in 2001. Only '99 and '00 models were had the faulty ETM.

What are the RPM's doing when you're experiencing the shuddering?

Didn't realize it was just those 2 model years that were only affected.

Based on what they tried there, would seem they thought or were advised that maybe it was indeed the ETM unless they "reprogrammed" the whole car instead of just the ETM. Could be the the proverbial vaccum line/hose leak, however. Seems like there are little hoses everywhere in there around the Throttle Body.

But having said that, I trust your advice now that cleaning my Throttle Body on my '94 850 over the weekend seems to have solved my deceleration/coming to a stop stalling problem for now. Thanks for that.

Also, did you happen to see my follow-up question about running WITHOUT a Flame Trap?

Will that screw up the engine eventually? Just wanted to get your opnion on that.

The flame trap is there to prevent the flame from a backfire from shooting out of the intake manifold and igniting the fumes and oil in your crankcase. I think the possibility of this occuring is somewhat unlikely, but the idea of turning my engine into a big bomb, however small the chance it could go off, doesn't appeal to me. Just clean the flame trap every couple of oil changes and replace it when it looks bad.

OK, that makes sense. In that case, I'll go to the dealer in the next couple of days and buy a new FT, housing assembly and O-Ring gasket. Mine doesn't have Saturday hours, must make plenty during the week.

Because blowing up does seem worse to me than getting rear ended or rear ending someone else (that steering and braking gets much harder when the engine quits but you know that) when my car stalls out ; ).
