My 98 S70 Volvo squeals/screams when I turn the key to the auxiliary position. It continues even after turning the key to the start position, as well. I have read all I can find on the internet to determine what the problem is and have come to the conclusion that it must be the auxiliary belt.
NOW........where is it so I can check it?? I can't locate it and can't find anything that gives any kind of diagram of anywhere under the hood. The sound I am hearing seems to be coming from the area around the right headlight but that all seems to be enclosed. Where do I locate this belt?? (The noise is so bad it is embarassing to drive the car!)
Auxiliary Belt (?) screaming! Where is it located?

As you're looking at your engine bay with the hood up, it's on the left side next to the body panel.

"...when I turn the key to the auxiliary position. It continues even after turning the key to the start position...." Is the car running when you here this noise?? It's not very clear from your statement above. If is makes the noise even before the engine is running - it could be the air pump used for the emission control system. This pump is located down under the driver's side headlight. The bearing could be shot in the pump.........

Yes, it does continue after the motor starts! I have just been trying to figure out what it could be by going to various Volvo web sites and reading what problems other folks have had and that seemed the most likely of what I had read. Thank you so much for your input. I will definitely have that checked! The location sure sounds right.
Do you by chance know what kind of manual I can get that would give me good info on my specific Volvo? I found a Chilton's but it ran the gamut of about 9 years and multiple models, so was not sure if it would be specific enough for my car.

OK, I just re-read your statement and realized that I mis-read it!
The noise starts when I first turn the key (in the auxiliary position) but before I even try to turn it to the start position. Turning the motor on does not change it. It continues the sound the entire time I drive it until I turn the motor off. Sometimes it is louder than others but it is continuing. I had to spend quit a bit a money on an 'emissions control' problem a couple of years ago so expect that this is not going to be cheap either, if that indeed is what the problem is. Is this something that can just be disconnected, or is that being too ecologically unwise? I just don't have the money to spend a lot on fixing it at this time but am completely to the point where something must be done. It is LOUD!

OH! I just noticed that you said DRIVER's side. This is on the other (passenger) side but certainly right around the headlight.
(I think I read everything right this time. I just got excited that someone would offer to help me with my problem and dashed off (2) notes without absorbing all I should have!)

Try to manually turn your headlight wiper to see if it moves. If it moves by itself, it's broken. You can also check headlight wipers by applying windshield washer, which should trigger headlight wipers to wipe your headlights (you probably need someone else to watch the headlight wipers
). The headlight wiper motor can get stuck and make noise.

OH MY GOD,bluezero000, YOU HAVE FIXED MY CAR!!!
It WAS the headlight wiper that was causing the problem! I had never used the headlight wipers (I thought) and had a hard time finding out how to turn them on. Finally found in my book how to do it and lo and behold it was stuck!!
MANY THANKS, TO INFINITY! You have saved me embarassment from driving such a noisy car, and goodness knows how much money and time that I would have spent at the dealership had I not been able to get this information.
I really appreciate you!

One of my headlight washers will manually turn... so it appears to be broken... how do I automatically apply the headlight washer? I couldn't find anything in the manual!
thanks!
the mystery whine has returned
