Whining Noise

Post by Guest »

97 850 t-5

When my engine is cold and I gently accelerate there is a noticeable whining sound. However, it fades away after the initial acceleration and once the engine is warm the whining goes away from stand still starts.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks

Sorry to be of no help, but I have it too, some others have it, and it's called the Ghostly Moan.

Nobody's come up with a sound explaination... some air pump explainations have come close to plausibility.

Is it exclusive to the turbo models? or does it spread across all the models

just found this site, spend a good bit of time over at volvospeed, so hi all :-).

ive been tracking this same noise, so far i think i have it either narrowed down to the serp tensioner assembly, or a possibly the bearing on the alternator. I was all but sure it was the tensioner, but then i get a mechanics sthescope and now im not so sure....

ideas?

Let's write down what we know. This will lay out all the facts, as well as inform us if one of us actually has a different problem.

It happens more often when the weather is cold(er).
The sound changes pitch slightly.
It happens when the car is cold.
It happens in time with engine revs, but not always 1:1.
It never lasts more than 5 minutes.

You guys find the same?

my 98 s70 glt has suffered this same sympton for two years. finally getting louder. took in to volvo: they claim oil pump seals preventing full oil pressure from reaching the hydraulic valve lifters in the head. solution: remove oil pan and replace seals-described as o-ring type seals so initial oil pressure is restored. i never had any oil warning light/problem besides this groan which went away after a coupla minutes. we'll see if the dealer is right wed when i get her back. i'm very skeptical and think i'm being taken for an expensive fix.....

yea same symptoms as above with the whine/ groan.

The oring thing is a known problem, and you may actually have it. Its commonly called sticky lifter syndrome, the upper head becomes starved from oil. Usually you get a loud clattering / ticking, not to be confused with the noisy injectors our cars have.

after listening some more, it really sounds like i can hear the whine most right at the base of where the pulley connects to the alternator. I guess the next step is to take it apart and see what things feel like. Its getting colder here, so hopefulyl i can find a nice warm day to do this. I dont think anybody has actually had a failure so i think were all pretty safe..... i hope :-).

what milage are you guys who have the mystery groan at? Any idea what milage it started? Could this be related to differnt tension on a bearing somewhere from the new belt routing....

also ive actually replaced my ps pump, since i thought that was making the noise...

mine is a 96 850 with 172k non turbo 5 speed.

Started at ~55k miles. 72k miles now. It's not the serp belt. Replacing that made absolutely no difference with the sound.

Matt... the problem is exactly as you desrcibed it. I don't recall when it started but mine is at 104 k right now. I would like to know how the o rings turn out because that could be related to mine since my sister had my car for a while and well I'll just say she didn't maintain it at all.

Thanks
