Re: Turning an XC70 into a Rugged and Reliable Beater - Can it be done?

Thanks guys. SuperHerman, I push back on the Volvo because it's an unknown quantity to me and right now it's asking for a large up front investment. The reason I'm thinking of putting the work into the Volvo is because deep down, I believe it's a quality vehicle: going by the weight of the parts, qu...

Re: Turning an XC70 into a Rugged and Reliable Beater - Can it be done?

I should mention that I'd do all the work myself. So it's very expensive in terms of time, but not necessarily money considering how much used 4Runners and WRX's sell for.

Turning an XC70 into a Rugged and Reliable Beater - Can it be done?

Hey guys, It's been half a year since my '06 XC70 Water Pump failed, tossing the timing belt and damaging the head: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=88509 I want your opinion about whether these cars are "over engineered". I've had enough experience with modern BMWs...

Re: XC70 2.5T Killed by Water Pump Pulley Bearing

FYI, I just spoke with Allied Motor Parts in Atlanta: http://www.alliedmotorparts.com They said that rebuilding the head including about 10 new valves will be in the $350 - $450 range plus shipping. So for any fellow DIYers out there, that seems like a reasonable option. Pull the head yourself, mail...

Re: XC70 2.5T Killed by Water Pump Pulley Bearing

E-mailed this company inquiring about rebuilt heads or rebuilding my current head: https://www.cylinder-heads.com/ supehrman: Easist way to tell if the valves are bent i...

Re: XC70 2.5T Dead engine on highway; timing belt?

And more info: 1. I worked the timing belt around enough to inspect all of its teeth. They're all in tact. 2. I go to spin the water pump pulley by hand. It feels rough. Within a turn or two, it binds up and seizes. I can free it, and it binds up in the other direction within a turn or two. I free i...

Re: XC70 2.5T Dead engine on highway; timing belt?

Some more info: 1. There's a Metal Volvo dealership decal saying that belt was replaced at 100k on September of 2011. Car currently has 176k. 2. I think I had power for the first 10 seconds or so after hearing the thud. By the time I was in the rightmost lane, I watched the tac slowly fall from 1k t...

XC70 2.5T Killed by Water Pump Pulley Bearing

NOTE: I edited the title now that I've done some more investigation. Please chime in if you doubt my conclusion. I'd love to hear that I'm wrong. Hey guys, My '06 XC70 was on the highway last night when I felt/heard a soft thud. Thinking a tire might have had a problem, I pulled across traffic and o...

Alright, I'll be taking a closer look at it soon when I get under there for an ATF flush and suspension work. Thanks.
