Believe it or not --that's the noise that your half shaft will make when its on it's way out -- it's happened twice to me

I have looked for replacement rear axel's in all the usual Volvo part sites
( Groton , PDI etc. ) except for the dealer ( $$$$$ )
This is a Canadian Car with AWD, 5 speed, turbo -- maybe its that unusual

Job is done-- it took about 1hr.
Hint to others--- remove the electrical clips before removing the fan housing
it is a tight fit but it will come out and go back without removing anything else
